Seasons of Life.................................................................5/28/2014
As the seasons of life change so do desires of the heart. I have decided to take a walk from writing our adventures. Perhaps someday I may come back to it, but I'm content capturing Ruby and I's memories via other outlets. I hope you have all enjoyed what has been put forth. Take care everyone!
Winding Down..................................................................4/16/2013
As I find myself itching to start a countdown to the end of the school year, I also know that much has to be accomplished before that can happen! The days are getting longer and it seems that there should be more time, but school work, extra-curriculars, meetings and when time, running, have eaten up the day long before it all gets done. Ruby also has the itch for summer to be here. Most days she asks me when the big hot is coming and if I like the cold. A girl to my heart I tell you!
This past weekend Ruby and I had the in-laws with us. They also brought some of that big hot weather with them, particularly on Saturday. So we hit up the ISU spring game in Ames. It was deliciously hot and I think most of us walked away from the game with a tinge of red on our noses and shoulders. Loved it!

So when free-time does appear, Ruby has taken a love to these bead thingys. Thanks to her big garage sale purchase (yes, the signs have started to appear and you all know this girl brakes for garage sales) of $0.50, she has become an avid creator of all things colorful.
Staying busy has its perks of keeping ones mind off of other things, but some days it's inevitable or perhaps necessary to focus on those things. Today was one of them. It seemed every where I turned their was a blatantly obvious reminder of Mike. Not one of those moments where you sit back, ponder and take it all in moments, but in your face. During some student work time the memorial song by Luke Bryan, Drink A Beer, came on and I was instantly brought back to a great friend telling me this was his theme sing for Mike and him. Eyes downcast, I feverishly organized my desk.
Then a voice mail was received mid-morning. About lunch time I got around to listening to it, and it was the business that I had purchased Mike's headstone letting me know that it had been placed today. More tears as the finality of it all came together. Towards the end of the day an e-mail was received asking me to speak at a vigil telling "our" story. Easier said than done, but I will be doing it. It's my chance to once again share with others the great man Mike was. And to wrap it all up, I overheard Ruby talking in her room as I was out in the hallway. She kept saying, "Is Daddy here?" Then there would be a pause followed by the opening of her book containing Mike's voice recording and he would start to read her a story. I think that is about the most one heart can take for a day so I am thankful bedtime is drawing near. It's just been one of those days.
Dutch Saucijsjes...............................................................3/22/2014
Spring Break allowed for Ruby and I to make a trek up to NW Iowa to visit my family. It was so great hanging out with all of them. Ruby was mesmerized and bubbling with exciting to hang out with her cousins, us ladies got our junkin' fix, and we all got our hands in on some great action to whip up an old Dutch favorite, pig in the blankets.
Who would have known that making Dutch saucijsjes, pig in the blankets, with the entire family, almost literally, could have been sooo much fun!?!?! Us De Jong's got our hands dirty today, at Dad and Mom's house, and pumped out a good looking assortment of pig in the blankets! Bring it on Dutch bakery, you've got nothing on us :)
Another perk to our weekend. Getting the opportunity to play with some of papa's new baby bunnies. Ruby loved this little guy! Later she got to play with a little black one when all the cousins were around and at about that same time...chicks were hatching in papa's incubator. Talk about too much excitement for any youngster. Love all around.
Golden Cleat Award........................................................3/3/2014
This is going back to late January, but I just recently received a video from the Iowa Sports Turf Awards ceremony that Mike was honored at. Back in October of 2013, Mike was presented with the Golden Cleat award before his passing and I was given the opportunity to accept his award again at this meeting. The gentleman who presented the award did an amazing job and I hope that each of you finds it as heartwarming as I did.

Pinterest Conquered................................................2/23/2014
Pinterest...an addiction for some, loathed by others and forever creating the mindset that we can doing anything within the world of D.I.Y. So my friends and I gathered together to prove that it is possible. Yep, us girls took on a D.I.Y. project with nothing more than a picture, supplies, sugary treats to see us through and great fellowship. Say it with me...WOW! Yes, us girls pulled it off and all walked out the door with a pretty neat banner to hang up for Easter. Check mine out below...
Build a err...Pony.....................................................2/22/2014
Today was Saturday, yes, but it was also a weekend where Ruby and I had very little going on. That doesn't seem to happen very often, on top of busy weeks, so we had a big Mommy/Daughter date. Yep, this little squirt and I got to hang out for the entire afternoon without an agenda on our list at all :) Every once in a while, it does the body good to cherish those moments. So bring on the fun!
Our adventure started us out at Smashburger for some yummy grub! Ruby got her typical fries and chicken strips and I had a yummy avocado chicken sandwich with a side of veggie frites. Even the pics still make me want to go back for more!

Then after full tummies we took off to Kohls and Fareway for a few things before hitting up the big surprise of Ruby's day...Build a Bear! What a crazy busy place it was, but Ruby had on her patience in full swing as we started the process.
1st-Pick out a creepy, deflated stuffed animal. In Ruby's case, a My Little Pony. Rainbow Dash to be specific.
2nd-Wait in line to head to the stuffing machine to plump up that poor, deflated looking sack of an animal. Upon your turn, help out the stuffer by stepping on the foot pedal as you watch your critter come to life!
3rd-Keep pumping it up until it is the perfect huggable squishy.
4th-Bath time! Wash your newest critter and brush any tangles out of their fur. Don't forget to wash behind their ears :)
5th-Head to the dressing rooms. Make that critter shine! Ruby opted for a rainbow tutu and rainbow shoes. How fitting for Rainbow Dash don't you think?
Say hello to the newest addition to the Poll family. Ms. Rainbow Dash. Isn't she stunning?
So there you have it! Talk about enough excitement for one day after Build A Bear. After all that it only seemed to fitting to top off the day with a cupcake from none other than Scratch. Yummm...no photo evidence to be found. They were consumed far to quick.
Until next time. Hope you all had a swell Saturday and enjoyed some time to yourself, time with ones you love or doing the things you love.
Happy 4th Birthday Ruby Grace!..................................2/17/2014
Baby blue eyes has come along way in only 4 short years. I never would have imagined that this little peanut would grow into such a beautiful blondie, with charisma and independence that goes on for days. Her outlook on life is more than I could ask for and Ruby adds a whole new spark to life. Funny child she is and full of personality. Wonder where she gets that from? :)
We had a great time this past Saturday night, celebrating her 4th birthday just a tad early so grandparents and family could be there for it. Ruby insisted on the Frozen theme, from the most recent Disney movie, Frozen. Good food and many laughs were shared as we all got to watch another year pass and welcome Ruby into the ripe old age of 4. Then on her actual birthday, Monday the 17th, I was blessed with a 2 hour delay thanks to the weather. Ruby and I jammed out in the kitchen and whipped up birthday cupcakes before heading out for the day. Sugar and sprinkles seems like a great way to me, to start off a birthday day. Party on Ruby Grace, party on!

Scribbles..........................................................................1/21/2014
Never underestimate the power of a scribble. Tonight Ruby presented me with yet another one of her masterpieces. I kindly thanked her and pushed it off to the side, with several other masterpieces and moved onto the next thing. Long forgotten at bedtime I bent down for a hug and Ruby whispered in my ear. "Mommy, I miss Daddy too. I drew his name in blue for you."
What? Was she talking about her drawing from preschool? Did I miss something earlier? It didn't dawn on me right away what Ruby was talking about so I simply asked her what picture she was talking about. "The one with all the lines. Daddy's name is in blue. For you."
Tug. I had overlooked her artwork that meant the world to her and it was a simple statement of love to me. Continually amazed how she speaks and how the bumps in life can be explained through the innocence of a child.

Strong...................................................................................1/8/2014
I don't try to tell myself, I know that I am stronger. As is Ruby. It warmed my heart yesterday when my daycare provider informed me that Ruby and her had a good talk about God on the way home from preschool. That little girl has such a grip on where her Daddy is and how he is doing. She has an amazing ability to know the truth and she won't let others tell her otherwise. Imagine a 3 year old telling you that her Daddy is playing basketball in heaven and he can watch over everybody. Not only that, but he has angel wings. Those are the warm fuzzies that get you through the days and hours sometimes. Love that little peanut and strength.
Roots...............................................................................12/30/2013
A few neat pics that I took while in Michigan. Trying to capture a few of those things that may otherwise go unnoticed, but Ruby will be thankful they are there to remind her of where her Daddy grew up.
Merry Christmas to All and Happy Birthday Jesus!...12/27/2013
This year at Christmas, I was unsure of where my heart and mind would find themselves and if they would even align. Well I'm happy to say that they did align and it was for the best. Ruby and I had a great Christmas from start to finish as it seemed to stretch it's self out over a course of days. Follow along as I try to wrap up hours and days worth of time. Our pictures start at the immediate Poll family gathering for Christmas.
Advance about 9 hours later and Ruby and I were back in Des Moines and on our way to the Christmas eve service. We made it in the nick of time.
This was how Ruby and I celebrated Christ's birth Christmas morning at our home. Cinnamon rolls, extra frosting, bacon, side of KitKat's and the best rendition of Happy Birthday being belted from a 3 year old.

All in a weeks work.
Shop Hop......................................................................12/7/2013
Tonight we ventured out as true Iowans, bundled up and darn near put on the Carharts :) Ruby and I went to "downtown" Beaverdale and enjoyed the holiday festivities as Beaverdale Shop Hop took place. Our first stop was Grounds for Celebrations hoping to visit Santa. We sure saw Santa alright, and heard his sleigh bells, but the sight of him put Ruby into instant scared mode and we viewed Santa the rest of our time from our table a far. Not even a bag of candy and homemade Christmas cookies could lure her in.
Then it was off to Michael's for some pizza. First perk-I let her get a big girl cup instead of a kids cup. Second perk-she could order her own piece of cheese pizza by the slice instead of sharing a pizza with mommy. Ruby gobbled up her slice of cheese pizza as visions of sugar plums danced her head. Ok, so not sugar plums, but any type of sugar at Beaverdale Confections for dessert. She and I both know that anything from that store is yummy.
With our treats in hand from Beaverdale Confections we hopped back in the car to moozy down the streets and take in Christmas lights. Some folks in Beaverdale really know how to out-do themselves. Gasp worthy from a 3 year old is impressive.
Then it was home and off to bed. Little does Ruby know that someone else will be joining our festivities this year again. She's back...

Thanksgiving...................................................................12/1/2012
With the first holiday under our belt without Mike by our side, I can say that it went far better than anyone could have imagined. Ruby and I got to spend the weekend up in NW Iowa visiting my parents and extended family. From the time we left Wednesday evening to the time we returned Saturday evening we were on the go and meeting up with as much family as possible. We hit up my Dad's side of the family for Thanksgiving lunch and my Mom's side of the family for Thanksgiving supper.
Then it was off to the races come Friday morning for some Black Friday shopping. It's family tradition! No, we did not hit up stores Thursday evening, but we did wake up bright and early Friday morning to make it to the stores by 5 a.m. And let me tell you...shopping at 5 a.m. was a breeze compared to years past, mostly due to so many stores opening up Th. evening. Not that I agree with it, but it sure made my shopping experience worth it. And yes, many deals were found regardless of which ones were on the list.
Many of you faithful and constant supporters want to know how the holidays went and how life is going now days for Ruby and I. I can honestly say, from the bottom of my heart, that we are doing well. I wasn't sure what to expect as the days after the funeral left me feeling blah, crazy, lost and alone, but now things have gracefully changed. A mere 1 month later and Ruby and I are getting on with our lives. Ruby has a much better understanding of the finality of death and her questions at night are ceasing. The ceasing questions also provide me with relief that was much needed. Those questions were just as hard if not harder on me than they were on her. We also put a lot of emphasis on remembering fun times with Daddy and what we still have to remember him by verses talking about how sad it is that he is gone. Mike still got his little Christmas tree put up this year with all of his childhood ornaments and he's got a stocking hung on the mantel to remember him by. Ruby and I have looked at oodles of pictures, picture books, videos and talk about all the fun trips we got to take with Mike. He's forever in our hearts and minds, but the adjustment of his physical absence just takes time.
One realization that I have come to grip is this; Ruby and I lost bits and pieces of Mike over time, not suddenly on Oct. 25. ALS stripped Mike of physical capabilities day by day and we learned how to live without those things. It started simple with the inability to steadily hold Ruby as an infant. Then the ability to hold hands when walking together. Some time later it progressed to other things such as struggling to truly give me a hug, fearful to walk without his walker due to loss of balance and needing assistance in virtually all aspects of dressing and personal care. Eventually his wheelchair became his legs and there were no more opportunities for messing around outside with Ruby, unless he raced her while she rode her trike, which he did often, driving as I took on taxi driver status, and simply having someone to snuggle with. Ruby and I did our best to act as if those things hadn't disappeared from our lives, but you always know in your heart that you miss them and wish it wasn't so.
So as we take on the next round of holiday bliss with Christmas at our heels, we know that it may not be easy, but we also know that those bits and pieces that were lost over time, will now make it easier to know that he is healed and OK in heaven. Ruby and I still miss those bits and pieces, as well as Mike as a a husband and daddy, but we've had far longer to process his Earthly death than most realize.

Maize and Blue Among Hilton Magic...................11/20/2013
Many felt the magic of Hilton Coliseum come to life as the game neared the end, but I felt it long before then. While finding our seats for the game, I was trying to read our tickets and keep Ruby in line with us. Suddenly I saw #1 and realized that our tickets were in row #1 right behind the Michigan bench. Goosebumps raced along my skin and tears welled in my eyes as I recalled one of Mike's infamous last requests. This one in particular to the MI men's basketball head coach, Coach Beilein. A mere one week before Mike passed, he was given the opportunity to Skype with him. Mike's request, "I want tickets to the MI vs, Iowa State game in Ames, on Nov. 17, behind the MI bench". Ask and thou shall receive. Only Mike would have been able to pull of a request like that. So Ruby, Missy and Ian and myself went in honor of Mike that night.
Not only did we venture down to amazing seats, we were blessed to chat with two of the MI coaching staff, including Coach Beilein himself and assistant Coach Jordan. The coaching staff at MI will always have a place in my heart for how they have blessed our family and particularly Mike. They truly are a class act and genuinely great people.
Although a win wasn't in sight for the Wolverines that night, it didn't matter. I think we all went home with full hearts regardless of the outcome and will cherish that game for years to come.
Where Do the Moments Go?............................................11/12/13
With Ruby, family and friends of course. Perfect.
Where the Rubber Meets the Road.............................11/6/2013
So many want to know how we or I are doing and what they can do to help. I feel like both of these are loaded questions. It is called grieving and there is no simple answer. Yes, we are making it and will be OK, but day to day and hour to hour, that answer can change drastically. One minute I am feeling secure in the world with God as my right hand man, and the next I am bawling like a baby wondering why my husband, of all people, was chosen to be a man of inspiration and taken at such a young age when we had so much more to do and give.
Just last night Ruby and I were watching some home videos and one popped up from Mike wishing me a happy 4 year anniversary. The last thing he said was, "can't wait to have many more years with you and grow old together. I want to be here for Ruby and you for many more years". I don't beleive that in my heart, his idea of many more years, was a mere 1 1/2 years.
Despite the ups and downs that come my way, I still try to hold it together for Ruby and move through the days searching for odds and ends that add up to some joy in my heart and perhaps still bring some normalcy to Ruby's life. My first stab at finding joy was Wednesday, October 30. Yes, the day after Mike's funeral was Beggar's night in Des Moines and Ruby was up for trick-or-treating. Was I...maybe not, but we did it for her.

Then Thursday rolled around and it was off to NW Iowa to visit my sister and spend some time with her family. Sounded like a great idea at the time. To get out of Des Moines and escape. Problem being, you can't escape the feelings of your heart. They tagged along.
Bless my sister and her family though, for I was no ball of fire, but they kept Ruby and I busy. We took the kiddos trick-or-treating (again), painted pumpkins, did some shopping, had some great meals together and let the kids love on each other and play every chance they could.

A bright spot in the weekend was a quick pick me up from one of my men up above, my Big Man (God) or my Skinny Man (Mike). Not sure which, but I took this next pic as a sign from one or the other, or both.
Saturday evening, Ruby and I headed back to Des Moines for a normal Sunday followed by the routine of a normal week for Ruby including daycare and preschool. I took on the "business" side of things this week and tore apart every possible account that I could think of to make name changes, update policies, and such. Time consuming, tedious tasks that were great to be accomplished, yet sad to see Mike's identity removed from so many pieces of our life together. Bittersweet feelings all around.
Today, however, I had the chance to catch up with a good friend over lunch. Prior to this lunch date, the idea of pulling myself together, and being vulnerable over lunch seemed a smidge intimidating. By the time lunch was done, I had no idea 2 hours could pass by so easily, as we shot the breeze in many different directions and ended the day with a whole new appreciation for gift cards and someone to share them with :) Love you lady! Thank you for a great lunch date filled with encouragement, honesty, love and just the right amount of "gush".
And how can you help? Any needs I'll post on the Facebook page, Polling Together for Mike and Kim, and prayer requests as I see fit. Today's...Evenings tend to be the toughest time of they day. Darkness brings on a heavy heart and not just in I. Ruby even tends to ask questions of Daddy as she's laying down for the night. May her little heart and mine find rest in the evenings and peace with the new "quiet".
Blessings

Fully Restored................................................................10/25/2013
Mike has finally been called to his heavenly home. This Friday afternoon, shortly before 1:30 pm, peacefully, with me by his side. Did he receive the miracle so many of us prayed for? I think so! He's in heaven rocking it out with the best of them, no wheelchairs allowed, and a fully restored body. Mike's time on earth seemed far too short, but he's in a much better place, free of pain and suffering, and finally able to enjoy life again. He has moved onto bigger and better things. Ruby and I will always know that Daddy is up there watching out for us. We know too that heaven is celebrating as another angel gets its wings.
Visitation and funeral arrangements to be announced soon. Tentatively planned for Monday visitation and Tuesday afternoon funeral.

Is There More in Store For Mike?
It's a question that has been rolling around Mike and I's heads lately. I won't go in depth explaining why we might think this, but right now Mike's body is not up for quitting and after watching him day after day, we have wondered why is he physically still with us? Medicine can't explain everything, nor can we begin to explain life without our Master's blueprints. One thing we do know, is that it has been laid upon several hearts to pray for not only heavenly peace, but peace in a restored body. We as Christians are called to have hope and faith that God will move mountains and bring help to those in need. Perhaps we should all be praying for peace in a new, restored body. Mike and I would be overjoyed to leave Kavanagh hand in hand together with Ruby in his arms. Wouldn't that be something to talk about? Mike and I would be unstoppable for The Lord. Some, I'm sure, just read that and thought, "poor Kim and Mike. They've got nothing else to hope for but a miracle." Why not? We've got nothing to lose and I know that I'd rather take Mike home to Ruby and I than wait to meet him at our heavenly home.
Our prayer request today? May The Lord heal Mike or take him, but please don't leave him as is.
Our prayer request today? May The Lord heal Mike or take him, but please don't leave him as is.
Where Do We Start?
Putting up a blog post has been in the work for days, but the words never seemed to come easy and putting in days at the Kavanagh house has become routine, although we know they are numbered. What might seem as a news flash to you, seems normal to us and we continue to move along our day one hour at a time. While we've been in "waiting" there have still been quite a few occasions for joy to poke it's head out at us. Anyone who has been here has perhaps witnessed some of them...
This past Tuesday, Mike received a surprise visit from some of the Iowa Chapter Sports Turf Managers Association. Not only did they come to chat and visit, but present Mike with one of their distinguished awards, The Golden Cleat Award. The Golden Cleat Award is a recognition for outstanding professional contribution to the sports turf industry. We all know that if Mike had continued his career with the Iowa Cubs he would be standing right along side all of these gentlemen, but ALS cut that dream short. They recognize that as well and felt that Mike should be the one recognized this year for his previous contributions and what he could have been, had ALS not thrown him a curveball. So proud of him! Mike tends to leave a mark wherever he goes and this just proved it yet once again.

Ruby continues to use the hospice house as her personal playground. From playing tag, running around as monsters, skipping and jumping or tearing apart the toy closet. Her giggles resonate through the halls most evenings. We can only hope that others find it as uplifting as we do, to hear the laughter of a child.
Mike showed up for supper in style this evening! We wheeled him right down to our supper table and enjoyed a meal as a family. We said grace, dug into some tasty beef stew (thanks Celeste :) and enjoyed yet one more meal together.
So while we wait, we will yet look for the joys. How sad otherwise. Like I said, one hour at a time and go from there.
Time Moves At It's Own Speed
Mike, Ruby and I have put in a collective total of 19 days, including today. Where did that time go? It seems like just yesterday I was walking out our front door to be greeted at the Kavanagh hospice house. Now we stand by Mike's side encouraging smiles, reminiscing of better days, and preparing for the days ahead. It takes a toll on the mind and body, but at the same time, it heals and strengthens the heart for the next step. Some days seem to continue while others speedy by. Either way, we are in it together.
Today I was reminded of this. Friday was a planned day off at school, but by no means was my lack of presence forgotten. The staff at school and administration has pulled along side me as I prepare for the end of Mike's earthly life. They came full circle this morning, sporting none other than M's for Mike and his love affair with Michigan. Talk about feeling arms around you even when not there. Yesterday also marked my last day of work before taking a leave. I will miss them tremendously while gone, but right now, Mike and Ruby are waiting for much deserved attention.

Go Blue!
Game day! Indeed it was. Last weekend we hoped to have Mike home to watch football in the comfort of his own home, but that all quickly changed. This week however we had our own game plan. Despite Mike being in hospice care, we still have the opportunity to take him home for a couple hours, a long afternoon or even overnight if we feel it's possible and safe for him. So we took advantage of that today and made sure Mike was home to catch his MI Wolverines, in action, from the comfort of his own living room.
Ruby and I spent the morning preparing for Mike's arrival home. Errands were ran, snacks were purchased, and maize and blue adorned more of our house than ever before :) From balloons and footballs, to snacks and then there was our attire. Ruby and I both made sure to wear a Michigan shirt and add accessories as needed. Thank you Aunt Kim for the great MI items! Ruby loved them and made sure that every last one was used. I even sported my morning coffee MI style.

Then it was off to the Kavanagh house to get Mike! Ruby was so excited the entire time. She could hardly contain her excitement. Once at Kavanagh, a group effort got him dressed, into his chair and out the door to spend some much needed quality time at HOME. Once we got home, Ruby could hardly wait to show Daddy all her stuff for the big game. She basically escorted him around making pit stops to show off the balloons, goody table, and anything else he might find interesting.
Shortly there after, my family arrived to add to the game day party and an afternoon of football, family, laughter and good times was had. It was an afternoon much needed by Ruby and I, and I think that we both got our Mike fix. There is just something about having loved ones at home. By the end of the game, it was about time to get Mike back to "his house" as I refer to Kavanagh or "Daddy's doctor's house" as Ruby refers to it. Mike seemed slightly reluctant to leave as soon as possible, but he made the transition back, only to be greeted by a lifelong friend who has traveled from Chicago to visit him. I'm positive that Mike would call this a good day, if not a great day! We had such a good time by all, spent time relaxing and hanging out, and just enjoyed each other's company. I'm also sure that Mike would be highly disappointed by this blog post had I not mentioned that Michigan WON! GO BLUE!
Where's the pic to prove Mike was home? On my sister's camera, go figure. I'll share if I get the chance later.

Kickin' It............................................................................10/2/2013
We may all look a little on the worn side, but this is how our days after school our spent. Hanging out with Mike and soaking in the good days as they come. See the brightness in his eyes? Mike's still got it. I love this man to pieces and Ruby is one lucky little lady.
On top of a great afternoon/evening with Mike, we were also showered with chalk art! Our driveway has never looked so great! Thank you small group for the welcome home treat. Ruby and I love it! It brightened our day. As for brightening Mike's day? Check out the last pic and the caption sums it up nicely :0

Fighting the Good Fight..................................................10/1/2013
(written last evening)
Monday was 1 week from Mike's start of his stay at the hospice house, Kavanagh. It has been one heck of a week and our trust in the Lord, patience, strength and courage have all been put to the test more than once. I was able to meet with Mike's doctor, Dr. Mouser (the guardian angel who blessed us with a prayer as we took off for Kavanagh) and discuss what the future would hold.
He, Mike and I had a very open and honest conversation. Dr. Mouser explained to us that everything happening in Mike's body was unlikely to get better and bringing Mike home was probably not the wisest decision. The last thing we want to do is compromise his health, and he being home would require 24/7 aids or nurses to care for his needs. That alone adds a whole new dynamic to a family and there is no guarantee that it is better or worse for Mike. At the Kavanagh house he has nurses and aids there with the right equipment to help him in any way possible. It also helps maintain relationships between a husband and wife instead of spouse and caregiver. Mike and I had discussed things like this earlier and we were both in agreement that a strained marriage would never be ideal and the last thing he wants is for I to be stressed out. A man who still, even now, rarely thinks of himself. As our conversation wore on, Mike and I braced ourselves for what was yet to come.
Dr. Mouser went on to explain his estimated life expectancy for Mike. Mike and I had also discussed time frames and our guesses at life, as if we could play God, but for some reason it didn't match up with Dr. Mouser's experience. Not that he is to be the answer, but he has seen this before. Mike's doctor stated as such, "I'd give you long weeks to short months". He said it. 2-4 weeks to 2-3 months. Mike is battling the final stages of ALS. He has been an amazing fighter from day one, but sometimes the fight must come to an end. Mike can only fight for so long and his body is ready. He has fought the good fight and he is also ready for it to be done.
My heart is breaking and tears are flooding my keyboard, but at the same time, Mike and I both knew this day would come. We have had 5+ amazing years of marriage despite the ALS, brought a beautiful and charming little girl into this world-who will forever be a beacon of light, and tackled everything we could head on. Our hearts have been full, and when Dr. Mouser stated his guesstimate for Mike, we both knew in our hearts that it was OK. We will embrace the time that remains and capture the remaining memories to be had.

Saturday Update................................................................9/28/2013
To our trusty followers...you have persistence like none other. I myself don't even know if I'd still be reading these updates daily :) You guys are die-hards and that's why we appreciate it so much!
Here it is, Saturday evening already. Mike's parents, sister and brother in-law, Ruby and I spent most of the day hanging out with Mike. It darn near looked like we were throwing a party in his room at times, but the vibes weren't always screaming party.
To be very honest, our joy tanks are near empty. Mike himself is getting down and out, and I am finding it harder and harder to keep my cool among the anxiety, stress, fear, and unknowns. Today was rough for both Mike and I, and probably others in the room. We both know that ALS will take it's toll, but when it happens, you never know if one will bounce back or if that will become the new "normal". If that's the case, it just might be a little tougher to hand out smiles and keep a positive outlook on things.
I had to remind myself where we started last Sunday evening/Monday morning to see where progress had been made and to keep that forward movement in my mind. Things have been resolved. Mike's throat is not nearly as painful, nausea is not persistent, stomach aches/cramping are not persistent, and he is finding peace at times with medicines verses experiencing pain and discomfort all the time. There is more to be worked on as well.
Funny how reminders make there ways to us at the most opportune time, but we all know there is no such thing as coincidences. They are acts of God. I'll leave you on these notes and my prayer this evening for Mike and I.
Let Him have all your worries and cares, for He is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you.

Friday Update.....................................................................9/27/2013
Apologizes for no update yesterday, but sleep and school beckoned my name. I think that I can say today was a stable day. Perhaps 2 steps forward, 1 step back sort of day, but overall stable. Mike started out the day in awesome spirits! The doctor informed me that he was upbeat, determined to sit in his chair and once in his chair, had a great neck and head strength as well as good articulation in his movements. Amen! 2 steps forward! Then, it was 1 step back. Mike's meds and other additional cares kicked in and wiped him out by the time it was all said and done.
When I arrived tonight after school with Ruby, he was in the process of getting rolled over and all he wanted to do was give Ruby knucks which nearly sent he and I into tears. How badly he wants to do his "normal" Daddy things and follow us home. There was talk of home today however. Mike's doctor mentioned that we had to get through the weekend and try to level out his pain medicines and others, but at least stay at Kavanagh through Monday. Then we can re-evaluate. Right now there is talk of getting additional care in the home along with his current aids. Not sure what that will all look like, but it may be a transition for our family as we invite more to help out Mike during his days and our evenings.
Hoping that sleep comes over Mike tonight as sleep as still been a struggle which leads to fatigue. Working out meds can be a bugger, but there's always other things to wonder about as well. Mike would like to know, "Why do hospital beds suck?" Straight from the horses mouth :)

Wednesday Update..........................................................9/25/2013
Yah! I think we can say that forward progress was made today. Mike is now back to "eating" again. He took in a couple cans of his food without any nausea or stomach problems. He even requested another tube feeding before I left this evening. Pain, cramping/spasms, hydration and comfort are all still being worked on, but at the same time, he did ask for quite a few more things. Perhaps he's feeling up to more? Made sure that the t.v. was set to his favorite show at 7 pm and he made sure that before I left the nurses knew which channel at 9 pm :)
Right now, the biggest struggle for the nurses is communication. Mike's speech has deteriorated over the past few months, but this past week it has become far worse (I don't think permanent). So if you could send prayers for the communication lines to be opened that would be great. I have become a translator, but can't be there every time to do so. Prayers also for Mike's parents as they are away from home, spending days with Mike and evenings with all of us. They too have a lot on their hearts and minds.
Until tomorrow...good night.

Tuesday Update................................................................9/24/2013
Many want to know how Mike is doing. Today, as stated yesterday, should have been a day for progress. There was some positives, but most of Mike's day was spent in and out of sleep, thanks to the many meds that he is on. Not being familiar with all the prescription names and medical terms, all I can say for sure is, Mike is trying out a lot of meds to ease his throat and stomach pains, keep up his hydration and eventually get back on tube feedings to get some nutrition. I could tell you so much more, but by the end of the day it's a little blurry and I know that he still has quite some ways to go. He's not up for visitors yet, but he did let his Dad and Mom sneak in the room for the day, so he had some company to keep an eye on him as well, other than just I.
Mike was also blessed by an over-the-top Ruby after I picked her up from daycare/preschool. Our littles sure knows how to put on a good show almost anywhere we go. Mike was probably just as happy for some peace and quiet after Ruby and I took off for home tonight :) I'm not quite sure that Ruby has grasped what's going on, because she's asked the past two evenings at bedtime, "when is Daddy coming back for nigh-night?" Her innocence is a fresh reminder that seeing things through the eyes of a child seems far less daunting and stressful than through the eyes of an adult. We could all benefit from trying it more often.
Projected homecoming? No idea. That has yet to come up in any conversation and won't until Mike starts to make more progress in taking care of the symptoms and putting him at ease.
Had the chance to read to Mike all of the words of encouragement, along with texts, messages and voice mails. I know from the bottom of my heart that he was deeply moved, wishes he was not on the receiving end and would much rather be doing the same for you.
Signing off before hitting the sack and heading back to school tomorrow. May my kiddos at school have left me a classroom with 4 walls and all my gum still in my desk. :)

Some Monday's Just Aren't Made to be Boring.......9/23/2013
Mike's door sign that greeted us as he was admitted to the Kavanaugh House.
Today was supposed to be just another Monday, but the previous week and past weekend’s events caught up with Mike. By Sunday evening, upon the arrival home from our trip to visit family, Mike was miserable with fatigue, weakness, dehydration, nausea and stomach pains. We considered bringing him into the ER, but instead choose to call the on-call nurse through his health care provider. She came out yet that evening and tried to help him get comfortable and spoke with us about getting additional help the following morning.
So Monday morning rolled around and Mike wasn't really feeling any better. So our options were presented to us by Mike’s doctor, who came to do a home visit, and it was decided to have Mike go to the Kavanagh House for additional comfort and care measures. What exactly is the Kavanagh house? The Kavanagh house is a hospice facility.
Now most of you who just read that dreaded word, hospice, and those who may have heard it elsewhere, must know that Mike had been receiving hospice care for quite some time, but directly from the home. With his diagnosis of ALS, and there being no cure, he is eligible for hospice and quite frankly, it is best for him. Very pro-active support, amazing care by amazing people and much more frequent visits from doctors and nurses alike to weekly check in with Mike. So those of you who heard hospice, I’m sorry if you immediately thought life or death, but Mike is in good hands and the goal is to have him back home in under a week. The Kavanagh House is a place for some to get back on their feet and return to their normal, quality of life, and that is our goal for Mike as well! We are hopeful to have him back in his living room, cheering on Michigan football this weekend.
So how is he? Mike is slowly regaining some strength. The first day is combatting a lot of symptoms all at one time, but he should be making progress come Tuesday. He’s always been a stubborn one and one heck of a trooper. Yes, it sucks and it’s stressful at times, but he and I, have better things to do than sit in or by a hospital bed.
Prayers are always welcome for our family as a whole. Quick story about prayer today...before Mike and I left for the Kavanagh house, not only did we have a nurse and doctor by our side, but we had a doctor praying over us before we left. When was the last time you were prayed over by your doctor? Like I said, AMAZING people! We have already been blessed by many willing to help out wherever needed. If you were one of them and I never got back to you, please know it didn't go unnoticed. I've just been trying to keep our ducks in a row or at least a cluster :)

C.F.D.....................................................................................9/23/2013
Thanks to a recent friends diagnosis of my C.F.D., compulsive fall disorder, this weekend proved her to be 100% accurate! Mike, Ruby and I made the trek up to NW Iowa/SE South Dakota for a family filled weekend and a chance to visit the Scarecrow Festival. We got to stay with my sister and brother in-law along with their kiddos. Ruby was so happy to have friends with her 24/7. From the time they woke up, to the time they went back to bed, slumber party style, Ruby had her cousins full attention and new playmates for the weekend.
Friday night after arriving at my sister's house, we dropped Mike off to watch some football and Ruby and I took off to catch a high school football game. Despite a great loss, we still took in a beautiful evening and had some time to catch up with my sis.
Saturday morning was Scarecrow Festival time. I had been quite excited to go for quite some time and it turned out to be another beautiful day. We arrived at 10 a.m. to find the scarecrows a plenty, a few pumpkins around, homemade goodies of all sorts, vendors, a kiddie carnival and lunch served by the ladies of Akron. Nothing beats taverns and homemade pie for lunch with a bite of crispy autumn air. Love it!

New student..........................................................................9/6/2013
The week has already flown by! Friday snuck up on me, thanks in part to having Monday off due to Labor Day. Now it's Friday night and catch up time. Our big news for the week? We've got a new student in the house! Ruby has joined the ranks with the rest of the first timers and took her turn at 1st day of preschool. She liked it so much she even made it all 3 days :) Quite frankly, she was bummed when she didn't get to go on Friday. Only 3 days a week, Tues/Wed/Th, from 12:30-3. Her highlight of the week included a bear hunt and finding pots of honey! Oh, to be in preschool again. We didn't know how good we had it.
Zzz........................................................................................8/28/2013
To our avid followers and fans...thank you for wanting to know what we are up to. Thank you also for putting up with fewer blogs as school beckons my name. With that said, may our family be doing exactly what Ruby is doing to the left this coming holiday weekend. Yes, we have plans with in-laws coming to town, a Labor Day party out in Williamsburg, IA, and a small group gathering, but sleep may just be the most beautiful thing yet :) I don't know who is more tuckered out these days, my students or I, as we all transition back into routine. May life be treating you well and may you find yourself among family and friends this holiday weekend!
That's How We Roll........................................................8/17/2013
School has yet to really start with students, and it already seems I'm lagging behind on any sort of Poll family update. I promise, we are still kicking it :) I headed back to school on Wednesday, therefore, throwing a thing callled reality, back at us. The magical days of summer are a thing of the past and alarm clocks and bedtime routines are in full swing. School itself has been going well and oddly, I feel prepared. After 6 years I've got some confidence going into the new school year! We'll see how long that prepared feeling lasts...a couple months, 2 days, 5 minutes? By the time Friday rolled around, we all seemed to be lacking in sleep, patience, and fresh tan lines.
To ease the week, Mike's sister, Missy and her husband Ian, invited Ruby over for a slumber party so Mike and I could claim a date night. We hit up Noodles and Co. for supper as the 3 of us, dropped Ruby off for her slumber party adventures, then made our way to Apple Bee's for dessert, and finished the night off with a Redbox DVD rental. Food and relaxation, that's how we roll.
Saturday morning meant sleeping in without a 3 year old alarm clock in the house, followed by a much needed run and haircut before picking up Ruby again. Ruby had far more than just fun with Aunt Missy and Uncle Ian. She could have bubbled over on the car ride home telling me all the details. A dog park visit with Nati, then slushies and candy on the way home, followed by sleeping with Nati. Then Ruby's morning included a grand breakfast spead before hitting the showers with, once again, Nati. Seeing a pattern? Ruby is in love with Missy and Ian's dog, Nati. Here's proof...

Ruby and I hit up a few errands on the way home and then settled in for the rest of the day. Ruby even helped me bake a cake. I've found out the hard way, but there is no such thing as making 1 cake anymore. If a cake is to be made, there needs to be 2. 1 for me to decorate and 1 for Ruby to "decorate". Little miss Ruby has found a love for most things sweet, including frosting and sprinkles, and wants to do everything herself. Sound familiar to anyone else? So 2 cakes it is. Hers and mine.
So with all that said, there are still a few things that linger from summer and one of them is sweet corn. Happy eating ya'll!
Travels Done and Back to Normal......................8/6/2013
What have we been up to? Not much! Now that are travels have subsided it is back to relaxing and chilling. We finally caught a Sunday worship service at our own church, bought a week's worth of groceries, and even deep cleaned the house because it was dirty after we lived in it for more than a few days :) Some have even caught up on their sleeping.
I'm winding things down for the summer with school starting up next Wednesday. It seems that we had some loose ends to wrap up with appts. that had yet to happen and people to meet with before summer was over. So with that said, the end of summer is pretty low key and plenty of items to check off our list.
Today we checked off yet one more visit to Blank Park Zoo followed by an afternoon of swimming. Then it was off to give blood to help out a student trying to earn a scholarship for community involvement with a quick stop at school just to see how the classroom held up over the summer. Next, it was home for supper and bath time. For some odd reason, Mike, known for being the party pooper, offered Ruby the chance to take her bath outside in her pool before we drained if for the night. Of course she said YES and raced outside to sneak in one more swim, complete with shampoo and conditioner. Once she was cleaned off it was all about playing baby seal and mama seal. Did I mention that we went to the zoo this morning?

A few things we are looking forward to before school beckons my name...
-I Cubs game complete with fireworks
-Meeting Ruby's preschool teacher. We'll see how it is being on the other side of a parent/teacher conference :)
-Getting Mike in for a feeding tube replacement (standard maintenance). Maybe Mike isn't looking forward to this one 100%.
-Letting Mediacom hopefully solve our wireless internet connection.
-Take in more family time
-Leaving the alarm clock off for a few more days.

We're Off To See The Wizard........................................7/22/2013
Ok, so not quite the great Oz, but close. We took off to Kansas this past weekend to spend some time with my (Kim's) younger brother and sister-in-law. They live mighty close to Wamego, Kansas, which is where quite a bit of the movie, The Wizard of Oz, was taped and we saw plenty of billboards boasting there moment of glory. Jon and Karis, however, live in Manhattan, Kansas, home of Kansas State.
We got there Friday around noon and jumped right into helping out around their new house. My parents had also made the trip so it was like a mini family gathering as well. I got to help paint a kitchen while my mom tackled the dining room and living room while the guys stayed busy outside working on shelving and a washing platform. What did Ruby do? Prance around and in between indoors and outdoors teasing Zoe, the dog, and trying to convince all of us that we needed to go to the pool. Not a bad idea as it was yet another hot weekend in Kansas like so many other places lately it seems.
By Friday late afternoon, the house was pretty much back together with freshly painted walls, new storage areas, and a quick clean up before Karis hosted a Norwex party for us ladies while the guys took Ruby back to the hotel for her long awaited pool time. After the party we all made our way downtown for an amazing meal at Coco Bolos. Yum! Great tex-mex and a few other dishes as well.
Saturday morning it was time to relax so we took off for the Manhattan zoo. Ruby was once again in 7th heaven as we walked from one exhibit to the next.

Saturday afternoon we thought we would hit up the splash park, but low and behold the rains came into town and kept us behind doors. So instead, we watched a movie as a family, hit up a few shops, and then got ready to go out for some New York style pizza at AJ's. Once again delicious! Then we hit up the mall for a few rounds of stores before heading back to Jon and Karis' for a one of a kind game, Scruble. (sp?) Try it if you get the chance!
Sunday morning rolled around and just in time for one last chance for Ruby to catch the pool and hot tub before making the trek back home.
As fun as our travels were this summer, we officially can say that we are done traveling for the summer. The trip to Kansas brought up the rear for our travels, but don't worry, they aren't done yet. We still have several guests coming our way before summer is officially over, but until then, we will be found in the comfort of our home, or at least nearby. Say the pool perhaps?

Hi-ho, Hi-ho, It's Off to Michigan We Go...............7/17/2013
Whoo! Talk about a whirl wind of activity on our most recent trip to Michigan to visit Mike's parents and extended family. We left early Wednesday (July 10) and started the trek to Michigan. Thanks to Mike rationing Ruby and I's liquid intake, we made it there in 8 hours flat with 1 stop for lunch, potty and stretch. By late afternoon we were relaxing at Papa and Mama's house. We stayed with Mike's cousin, Craig, but most of our days were spent at the rents house and I don't think Ruby would have had it any other way.
Wednesday-traveling and relaxing with Mike's parents at their house
Thursday-Relaxing and taking in the Street Performers at downtown Holland.
Thursday was a great day to unwind after riding in a van most of the day before. We spent the majority of the day hanging out at the farm. Ruby was almost to the point of over-stimulated. So many choices! Should she ride the mini buck first, jump on the trampoline, go swimming in the pool, or dig through the shelves of grandma's toys? By evening we were ready to head out. We hit up a favorite of the parents, Crazy Horse, and then headed to downtown Holland for a beautiful evening of street performers.

Friday-visiting with family and turning it into a pool party!
We got to meet up with Mike's brother, Mitch, and his family for afternoon and evening. It's always a great time when we get to visit with them and the kiddos get a chance to hang out. Our time together was quickly spent hanging together outside, swimming, grilling for supper, and watching the kiddos run around for hours.

Saturday-Farmers market and date night.
Saturday morning we started off by hitting up the local farmers market on the hunt for fresh Michigan blueberries. Found them! Also got some yummy dried fruits and great looking flowers. Yep, transported them all the way back to Iowa and I hope, fingers crossed, that they survive the Iowa heat. Then it was back home for more swimming, tractor rides with Papa Poll and then Mike and I headed out for a date night while Ruby went to the park and out for pizza with the grandparents. Mike and I enjoyed a great meal on the outdoor deck at Boat Werks, overlooking Lake Macatawa. Then we walked the boardwalk before hitting up Peach Wave for dessert.

Sunday-Church followed by BEACH!
Sunday was yet another great day. We took in a service at Hamilton Reformed Church and then made our way home to quickly pack up for the beach. It was quite hot, just like the previous days, and we wanted to get to the state park before the lots were full. Unfortunately, the state park was already full, but we hit up the next local park and got in before the crowds. Then we set up shack and enjoyed the cool waters of Lake Michigan to dampen the heat indexes kicking in. Ruby loved it and we had to bribe her to get out of the water and leave the beach. So we bribed with the park and then it was back home we went. One last chance for Ruby to swim in Papa and Mama's pool, jump on the trampoline and play with all the toys before hitting the road again Monday morning.

On the Mend, We Think....................................................7/6/2013
This past week has included far too many ailments for our liking, but luckily we have taken them all in stride. First there was Ruby this past Sunday who decided to climb up the slide and found herself on the ground with a possibly fractured elbow. Ortho appointment Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. Please feel free to send prayers and good vibes our way for a minor fracture or even nothing at all. That would be awesome! Ruby and I have come to find out that neither one of us is very good at making her arm waterproof. :)
Tuesday Mike had a scheduled pediatric appointment for an ingrown toenail. Hasta la vista to most of the nail and he is on the mend. Just a band-aid and some antibiotic ointment. Simple enough for this nurse.
This past Monday Mike started to notice some itching and by Tuesday I noticed quite the rash developing on his back. Low and behold, the nurse and doctor primarily responsible for Mike's health, agreed that he has a minor case of shingles. Oddly enough, Mike has a very high pain tolerance, thanks in part to much pain in association with ALS, that he barely notices the shingles other than some itching. I don't and can't comprehend how he doesn't really notice it, but that makes things much easier on himself. So he's been taking that on in stride as well this week. We also have very little worries of it being contagious or spreading because Ruby has been vaccinated, I have had chicken pox, and his sores are so confined that it would take some drastic measure for anyone to get it. On the flip side, no matter how great one's pain tolerance, it can't sluff of nausea associated with prescription drugs. Day #1 of 5 day dose under his belt and we are hoping that days #2-5 go much smoother with far less nausea.
With all of that said, I've found myself playing nurse quite well this week. Thankfully, everything that came at us was pretty minor and my "patients" are troopers! We still enjoyed the 4th, plenty of water time outside (hence the reason I know that we can't work magic in keeping casts dry) and even caught an outdoor movie at the Newton drive in movie theater last night. Lots of good times, memories made and more to come as we are headed off to Michigan this week as well to hang out with Mike's family. We can't wait to get out there. It has been far too long and once Ruby finds out (the morning of, of course :) she too will be beyond excited to see Mama and Papa Poll!

Wedding Bling and Arm Bling........................................7/2/2013
Friday evening, June 28, we had the honor of joining Kim's oldest brother, Ryan, and his bride, Amanda at an amazing country wedding. The wedding was held out at Adel, IA, on a large farm complete with round-bails greeting you on your drive in, church pews lined up outside for the ceremony, and a rustic barn to complete the evening. We were so happy to see Ryan and Amanda tie the knot on such a beautiful day and it made for a great family reunion as well. Lots of family and friends gathered to join in the celebration. Check out the pics below for a quick recap of our weekend starting with the rehearsal supper Thursday evening at the Iowa Machine Shed, Friday's events leading up to and the wedding itself along with the dance
The party didn't stop there! Saturday morning we got to join Ryan and Amanda for gift opening and brunch. Then we got to join them for a bbq Saturday evening as well. It was a great weekend together and we are so happy to welcome Amanda to the family as the Mrs. De Jong.
Now onto the arm bling...
As the weekend wrapped up we found ourselves outside enjoying a warm Sunday evening with Ruby playing on her park. I had ran inside to take care of the supper dishes and Mike was making his way back to the backyard to watch Ruby. Low and behold, I heard from the kitchen window, Ruby screaming and Mike whipping back to the house to get me. Ruby was standing in the backyard crying and unwilling to tell us what had happened. Only thing she would say was that her arm hurt and she held it tight. So we made our way indoors, cuddled up on the couch with a sippy and ice pack and sent her to bed to shake it off.
Monday morning it was off to daycare as I had curriculum work days at school. Ruby spent the day hanging out with her buddies, but when I went to pick her up, I had the gut feeling that there was more to her fall than just tears. Another little girl had accidentally bumped into her and it was more tears as she held her arm. So Ruby and I went home, told Mike we were taking off to the E.R. and off we went. Once at Mercy, things were smooth sailing. They doctors and nurses were great and Ruby was so brave through it all. She let them do x-rays, feel her arm and ask plenty of questions. Once it was all said and done, the diagnosis was a possible elbow fracture. They couldn't actually see the fracture, but the nature of the space between the joint suggested that it had seen bleeding due to some sort of break.
So they wrapped Ruby's arm in a temporary hard cast and sent us out the door with an appointment to see the ortho. Once there we will know much more. We'll know if a permanent hard cast is necessary or if the elbow can heal on it's own in a temporary hard/soft cast. Let's hope for the latter and keep a few weeks left in summer for swimming!

Junkstock or Bust............................................................6/23/2013
Talk about a great weekend, not only for me {Kim}, but for our entire family! I had the chance to head out west to Omaha, NE, with my sisters and sister in-law, mom, aunt and cousin for an one-of-a-kind event, Junkstock. Us ladies headed out Friday afternoon/evening and met up for the start of our girls weekend. Once in Omaha we hit up a few shopping places and rested our feet at a yummy restaurant, Brew Burgers. Then it was back to the hotel to rest up for our big event the next morning.
Saturday morning we woke up bright and early to head out on our adventure for the day. Weather Channel predicted HEAT for the day so we dressed appropriately and made our way out to the old dairy farm. I guess we all forgot to check out the entire days forecast. It was downright chilly! We huddled together trying to conserve heat while a small storm rolled through. Note-scarves make great makeshift blankets when in a pickle. While waiting in line and nearly 2 hours later we anxiously greeted the sun along with a wave of humidity.

Us ladies spent the first half of the day b-bopping from vendor to vendor taking in all of the incredible junk that they had to offer. Some old, some new, some re-purposed junk, but either way it was amazing to see and dig through! Lunch was just as great as the event itself. Local food trucks made their way out to the farm to offer their delicacies. My mom and I visited the Localmotive for an amazing chicken sandwich. It was loaded with chicken, bacon, provolone cheese, caramelized onions, onion-green chili jam, chipotle aioli, all on focaccia bread. Yum! Then it was back to junking.
Needless to say, our day was jammed with fun hanging out with the girls, eating good food, checking out new goodies and loading up our vehicles for the trip back home. One perk to loading up our junk...Junk Hunks :) A big shout out to all those high school kiddos who carried our junk from the vendor to the loading zone for us! Junkstock was a success and I think we just might have to head back again next year. Any more takers?
Just when I thought that my weekend was complete there was yet one more surprise to be had. I arrived home a little earlier than planned and was greeted by my amazing in-laws who had taken care of Ruby and kept Mike company. For some reason, they feel the need to earn their keep whenever they come out and that they did. Mike and I had made plans to redo our deck floor, but not only did the deck floor get done, but the entire deck was redone! It looks great and I was shocked, speechless, and thrilled all in one. I wish I had before and after pics to show it off, but I wasn't planning on it. Talk about a great weekend and to top it off, tonight Mike, Ruby and I get to join our church family for the All Church Swim Party. Sounds like great ending to me!
Father's Day Weekend in a Wrap
Happy belated Father's Day to all of you great Dads out there! We had the privilege of spending Father's Day up in NW Iowa with Kim's family. Some might wonder how in the world you can stay busy finding something to do in rural Iowa, but we seem to have no problem! Visiting family in the country brings on a whole new mindset and a much slower pace even compared to a "big" city like Des Moines. We love it!
Our trip started off on a bang with checking out Kim's nephew play t-ball on a hot evening. With a picnic supper and lawn chairs on board we made our way out out to Westfield, IA. Nearly landing in South Dakota :) Tatum, Kim's nephew, put on a great show and we were reminded again, what it's like to watch t-ball. Those little stinkers can pretty much pull off anything and make it look cute. It's quite comical and makes you appreciate the innocence of children.

Friday found us ready for b-bopping around and taking in some of the favorites. Hitting up Casey's bakery for almond patties, eating at the Fruited Plain, checking out a cute little "junk"/antique shop, and hanging out as a family. It's always nice to unwind. In addition to hanging out, it was unbelievably windy! We hadn't seen wind like that in ages. Ruby could have cared less and we played outside as much as possible.
Saturday was a busy day for Kim and her sisters. They decided to tackle the Color Vibe in Sioux Falls. When signing up for the run I don't think that they agreed to run through wind, rain, lighting and thunder. The Color Vibe wasn't nearly as colorful as initially intended, but it made for pretty puddles :) And thanks to tons of rain, the pictures were far and few between. No evidence from Kim, but they all finished strong and seemed to enjoy it despite the rain.
Sunday was the big day for all daddy's out there! We got to hang out with the entire De Jong clan doing one of Kim's dad's favorite activities....FISHING. Ruby finally got the chance to dip her Barbie fishing pole in the water and try her luck at catching anything. Her attention lasted for a mere few minutes and grandparents and parents took over the poles, but fish were caught! it was a beautiful day and Papa D.J. took along his fishing boat so we all took a trip around the lake as well. Click on pictures below for captions.

Once fishing was all done and we were back at Papa and Mama DJ's house, Ruby finally got to give her gift to Daddy. Ruby still thinks it's best to open presents for everyone so she did just that for Mike. He loved it all and can't help but smile when Ruby gets just as excited if not more than he. Mike loves that little stinker more than words will ever be able to express and the smiles prove it. Ruby has just as many smiles for Mike.
Where Do Your Smiles Come From?
Don't we all talk to blown up birds shortly after suffocating them with hugs?
Our smiles come from quite a few places but summer break has reminded us full force, yet again, who brings the most laughter to our house. Ruby. That little girl of ours is a spit fire with nothing better to do than dance, sing, and act her way through the day. Don't get us wrong, some days are nothing but attitude and drama, but we try to push those to the back of our minds! Ever feel like some days your life could be a musical? Try living at the Poll house. Some days it really is a musical thanks to Ruby feeling the desire to sing-song her way through every activity. So many instances that Mike and I are reminded what a blessing she is and why we get the joy of raising her.
Here's a few of those instances when we can't help but laugh, roll our eyes, or knowingly give each other "the look" as Ruby makes us want to discipline her and laugh at her all in one.
*The power of persuasion. Girl scout leaders might want to start recruiting because she will think you need something you never had any intentions of ever wanting in your life.
*Her infatuation with pregnant women. Don't ever be alarmed if she states in the grocery store, "Mommy! That lady has a baby in her tummy!". Many days we play "Parker's Mommy". Parker's Mommy...I hope you know who you are and can smile that you don't go forgotten at our house :)
*When I try to enter Ruby's room and she insists on me singing "Behold". Not familiar with the lyrics? Check them out...
Behold, behold!
I stand at the door and knock, knock, knock, (literally knock)
Behold, behold!
I stand at the door and knock, knock, knock,(literally knock)
If anyone hears my voice,
If anyone hears my voice,
I will open, open, open the door, (Ruby literally opens her door)
And let [mommy] come in.
*While driving around on weekends, Ruby is the first to yell from the back, "There's another one!" Another what? Garage sales of course. That's my girl!

Dentist or Bust...................................................................6/4/2013
Summer can't be all fun and games. Serious business is in store when it comes to teeth and the very first dentist appointment for Ruby. White knuckles or not, Ruby was an absolute champ and she took on that dentist chair like it was old business. A big thanks to Dr. Hawks and his team for making Ruby's first time a great one!
Check out the photo gallery below as her dentist appointment unfolded.

So on behalf of an awesome dentist appointment verifying a great set of chompers why not make cupcakes to keep combating those cavities? Ruby loves getting her hands in things when I'm baking. Cupcakes may just be the way to this girls heart. I made them while she was showering for the evening and surprised her when she was done. {she's known for taking looooong showers} By that time the tiny cupcakes were cool enough for frosting and off Ruby went with the frosting tool. So proud of her attention to detail and eye for great looking cupcakes.
1st weekend of Summer Break.......................................6/2/2013
Rearranged and the POLL found a new home.
The 1st weekend of summer break came quickly after finishing school on Tuesday, working curriculum days Wednesday and Thursday, and greeting my mom to our house Thursday afternoon! Despite the lack there of sun these days, having my mom over for a weekend was a blessing in itself. Once summer hits, things at the Poll household slooowwwww way down. We forget about alarms, leave the toys out overnight, grill as often as possible and plan only fun things. Anything else can pretty much wait for tomorrow.
With my mom in town we took on summer mentality. Mike and I caught a date night Thursday evening. Checked out the Valley Junction Farmers Market, shopped, ate at a new seafood place and enjoyed a quiet evening together (yes, Ruby is known as Chatty Cathy at our house).
Friday my mom and I did what we love to do....putz, shop and eat. Ruby hit up daycare for the day so my mom and I could bum around Des Moines. We hit up garage sales, checked out West End Salvage, and made our way to Valley Junction to scrounge around some of our favorite vintage/shabby chic/antique shops, including Vintage Number 35. Found some goodies and inspiration to take on a few crafts of our own. Check out the pics below for some new additions to the house...

My mom has such an eye for decorating, so its always fun to save things like that for when she comes around.
The rest of the weekend was pretty much hanging out. Saturday we got to play outside some, hit up a few more garage sales, cleaned out vehicles, visited some dear friends of ours in the birth of their little girl, and once again rolled out the grill just before it rained for supper. Did I mention that my mom also made a rhubarb dessert for us to enjoy after every meal this weekend as well. Yum...nothing beats rhubarb and it's kind of hard to come across in Des Moines for some reason. If anyone knows of a hook up please let me know!
Sunday it was off to church, followed by good byes to Mama D.J. before relaxing and vegging the rest of the day.

Root, Root, Root for the Home Team...
With a wet weekend before us, we laid low for Memorial Day weekend and held out until Monday for an outdoor outing. We made our way down to Principal Park to take in an Iowa Cubs game. All of us were pretty excited to hang out at the ball park, catch up with a few of the grounds crew guys, and take in a relaxing day of good old American fun :)
The day started wet, cold and windy so we all bundled up and made our way to downtown Des Moines for the 1 o'clock game. Low and behold, by the 3rd inning it was HOT! Crazy Iowa weather again for ya I guess. Ruby didn't seem to mind the weather one way or the other. She was however, very intrigued, by the fans sitting behind us which brought out some pretty good pics....check them out below.

Mike even got in on the fun :)
Did the I-Cubs win? No idea. We made our way down to the grounds crew during the 4th inning. By the time we had chatted and caught up with each other, Ruby was ready to head home, so that we did. Once home we played outside for a bit and then made our way out to the Pizza Ranch in support of a great family friend of ours. It was tip night at the Pizza Ranch, raising money for Parkinson's research, in memory of his dad. What a great way to wrap up the day, in addition to yummy food.

Easy as 1, 2, 3
May is our month to shine in honor of all effected by ALS. Below are three of our latest exerts to raise awareness and get our story out so maybe one day, others won't need to tell their story.
Happy Mother's Day
A great day it was! Mike and I got the pleasure of starting off the day teaching Ruby's Sunday School class. It was entertaining and heartwarming all in one. Ruby couldn't help but remind everyone, all the time, that Mike and I were her Mommy and Daddy.
After church Ruby insisted that I dig into her present. Not only has she been keeping track of her present, but it's been sitting in the dining room so I don't loose it since Thursday. According to Ruby at least. Mike and Ruby spoiled me with some great bracelets made by Ruby (see pic below), some awesome Iowa State yoga pants, and the start of necklaces for Ruby and I. Some day you might see the finished result, but for now it's just the start and I know that they will mean as much to Ruby as they already do to I.
Then it was a light lunch before hitting up the park to catch some rays. Ruby adores the swings and can't get enough of doggy unders (under-doggies :). Then it was back home for fun with our neighbors grandkids. They were enjoying lunch with their grandparents and made sure to make their way over as well. It was so nice to have kiddos right next door for Ruby to play with! I even got a chance to sit back in a lounge chair, enjoy some ice tea, and close my eyes for awhile while the kiddos played...great gift to any mom.
After playing it was a quick nap, supper on the grill, and more time hanging out with the family. A great and relaxing Mother's Day that I hope all got to enjoy as well. Enjoy the slideshow of our weekend!

Great Things Do Arise From Bad
It's always interesting to look back in life and wonder how things could have been or what they will be like. In honor of ALS Awareness month, I thought it would be neat to see all the great things we have been exposed to due to ALS. Each one of the pics below depicts an event that I'm not so sure our family would have been able to be a part of had ours lives been different. Had I more time, this collage of pics would be sure to grow because this is only touching the tip of the iceberg. (Click on pics for full-size image and captions.)
ALS Awareness Month
Ruby took a stab at writing on behalf of her Daddy with perhaps just a little help from Mommy. If you'd like to read Ruby's story feel free to at the link provided below:

All is Well
What a great weekend it was for us! Saturday was filled with much anticipation for Ruby. Not only did she get to hang out with Aunt Missy and Uncle Ian, she even got to have a slumber party with them! Mike and I were on prom chaperoning duties Saturday evening, so a slumber party seemed like the perfect idea. I was in the wrong for telling Ruby first thing Saturday morning. She drug herself from one thing to the next with me until it was finally time to go to Aunt Missy's.
Pretty positive they had a great time based on the stories we heard today and the pics that Missy sent our way. What other time does Ruby get to shower with her favorite dog, Nati?
Mike and I whooped it up at prom...or something like that. Mike claims I'm a social butterfly and that may be the case. It was great fun seeing all my kiddos strutting their stuff looking gorgeous in their dresses and handsome in their tuxes.

Sunday, Ruby was still with Missy and Ian, so Mike and I enjoyed a great time of sleeping in after a late night at prom. Can't remember the last time I slept in without Ruby greeting me beside our bed to let me know the sun is shining and it's morning. I snuck in a quick run, baked for awhile, cleaned for awhile, and then awaited the return of our precious peanut.
Missy, Ian and Ruby stopped by with McDonald's in hand so they joined us on the back deck for Sunday lunch outside. It was great! Then after lunch we took off the the park for Ruby to enjoy the great weather for for all of us to soak up some much needed vitamin D. 2 hours later we were leaving the park and before we knew it Ruby was asleep on the couch and that is where my Sunday ends for now. Ruby is snoring softly beside me, Mike is "resting" his eyes, and Disney Junior plays in the background. All is well.

Reap What You Sow...
God puts a lot of things, particularly people, in our lives who want nothing more than to bless you. We might also like to add, that this is one of the hardest things to receive as the one being blessed. More times than not, we have had to swallow our self-seeking independence, stubbornness and humble our pride in order to see how the blessings reap happiness for all involved.
There are two ways to consider blessings...
1. Being a blessing
2. Receiving a blessing
And they both have the same outcome regardless of being or receiving, a joy filled heart. With Mike's diagnosis nearly 4 years ago of A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease) blessings have showed up at our doorstep in more ways than one and usually when least expected. We've seen all sorts of mail with encouragement, devotions, thinking of you cards and financial help, medical supplies/equipment magically showing up, baked goodies left on our doorstep and meals provided just at the right timing. God has a beautifully woven plan, and has to get a kick out of seeing us speechless time after time.
This weekend a rather large blessing was bestowed upon us Poll's and in return we were able to bless a family as well. Thanks in part to the original family who presented us with the "Pay it Forward Van", we now got to pay it forward as well! Not only did we get to send it on it's way, but to another great home of another PALS (patients with ALS) in Iowa. This van had treated our family well for nearly 1 1/2 years and we know that Norm, or Stormin' Norman if you'd prefer, and his wife Shirley, will be blessed beyond words with what a handicapped accessible van can do for one in a wheelchair. It was immensely gratifying to see it move on to such a deserving couple. They had thanked us many times from the bottom of their hearts, but this time it was our time to give a blessing and it felt just as great, if not better, than receiving one.

Breathe...
This week, along with most weeks lately, seems to be trudging along as the school year nears an end and we try to wait patiently for spring or summer to roll in. I also know that there are many times this week when the good Lord has had to tap me on the shoulder as well and remind me to demonstrate patience, love and kindness as the winter blues seem to drag on. Reminders of summer are all around, but the sun hasn't quite agreed with the signs. Geese flying North, robins plucking worms from the wet lawn, new running shoes in the mail and Ruby waiting patiently to wear her new lip-lops :) Maybe Friday's possible snow flurries will be the last...I hope!
But a few breathers were taken when moments like these below fell into our laps.
But a few breathers were taken when moments like these below fell into our laps.
I hope that you have had a few moments this week to stop and smile over the little things. Perhaps the rain will let up as well. I don't foresee the rain lasting more than 40 days and nights :)
Go Blue!
What kinds of praises and joys have been heard from the Poll household lately? GO BLUE! This hubz of mine could not be happier to see his team of choice in the NCAA Championships tonight. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES verse Louisville Cardinals. You know who we are rooting for. You may even hear Ruby yelling, "Go blue!" if you happen to be driving by.
He is Risen Indeed!
Easter weekend came upon Mike and I kind of in a blur this year. We had every intent of staying put at home and enjoying an Easter for 3 at the Poll house. Little did I know that Mike would offer to head up to NW Iowa Friday after school to spend it with my family. By golly....I jumped on that opportunity and with nothing more than a pure scramble, we made it out the door Friday after school by 5 p.m. to join the rest of my family for Easter. 4 hours later and one happy husband, we arrived. Why a happy husband? Perhaps because his team of choice, Michigan Wolverines, threw up a W and on their way to the elite 8 in the NCAA basketball tourneys. Thanks Aunt Missy for sending text updates the entire game for Mike's sake.
Saturday morning we slept in until 8 and gathered ourselves for a slow, yet productive day. The girls (Mom, Karis, Amanda, Ruby and I) b-bopped around checking out some fun shops in Orange City and Sioux Center and running a few errands before the big Easter egg hunt and meal. Once we arrived back home it was lunch with the whole gang and on to more hanging out. How do we hang? This is how...

And excitement it was once everyone arrived. Kids, dogs and parents hardly knew what was going on, but low and behold we got every kid with an Easter basket in their hand and lined up for the official start of the Easter Egg hunt.
Nearly 200 eggs later, everyone made their way back in doors for a feast of a meal. And by the end of the night it was still chaos, but it was a house filled to the brim with love, laughter, and children on sugar highs.
And what's the next best thing to eating tons of sugar? Brushing teeth with the help of Uncle Ryan to get out all of those "sugar bugs". Thanks Uncle Ryan!
And once more it was off to bed because we still had one more very important part of the weekend. The Easter sunrise service at my hometown church, Maurice First Reformed Church.

Sunday morning came quickly, but it was well worth it. A 5:30 a.m. wake up call was in store in order to get the house full of siblings, spouses, and kids out the door and to the church by 7 a.m. We filed into a pew (not ours you may notice, we don't all claim dibs on those pews :) and took in a service of song and drama. What a great service it was. Praise and celebration in honor of Christ rising from the dead and saving each one of us, sinners by nature, so that we may have eternal life with him someday. No better reminder than that!
After the service we enjoyed a pancake breakfast and then made our way home. The rest of our day looked a little out of sorts as well. Reason being, Mike had a very important basketball game to catch as his good old Michigan boys were to play at 1:20 and there was no way he was going to miss 2 games in 1 weekend. So we packed up our stuff, gave our hugs and made our way back to Des Moines, only a few minutes late to catch the game and settle in for the rest of the day before Monday morning called for a reality check.
P.S. Michigan thew up another W and is on their way to the Final Four! Your welcome hun.

Thank You for the Sunshine...More Please
Today was finally a day of sunshine. I didn't get a chance to witness this until after school, thanks in part to a no window classroom :), but the wait was worth it. After my eyes adjusted to natural light, I soaked it in and got Ruby outside as well as soon as we got home. What a great way to wrap up any day.
Spring Break Part II
Half way down and only half way to go...so full speed ahead it was! Ruby, Mike and I took on the rest of Spring Break and started it off simple.
Wednesday-Slept in, laid around in our jammies, and then finally decided to do something. Ruby's bright idea...doggy treats. Did I mention that we don't have a dog? Yep, we make them for others and it all started this past Christmas for the daycare dogs. So if you are blessed by the next barrage of doggy treats you can thank Ruby.
After lunch we finally announced to Ruby we were hitting up the Ramada Tropics Hotel right here in Des Moines for a mini stay-cay. Off we went into the cold looking for a pool and something characteristic of a palm tree. Once there it was nothing but swimming! Ruby is getting more independent in the pool, but it was quite crowded so she was more apt to holding onto my hands or latching onto my hip. She did however enter our stay-cay without a nap so around 4 p.m. she asked for a hot pool and a nap. Her idea of a hot pool is a hot tub, but on one under 18 was allowed. So our other option...a hot bath and what a treat that was! She loves her baths, thanks in part to us having only a walk in shower, and she played in there for nearly 45 minutes.
After her bath and quick nap it was Pizza Hut delivery for supper followed by another round of swimming.

Thursday-Woke up with a little one ready to swim, only one small problem, pool didn't open until 9. So back to cartoons, followed by more swimming until it was nearly check out time. After checking out we hit up Ruby's favorite "restaurant" for lunch and watched her enjoy a Happy Meal from McDonalds :) The stay-cay was great and from there on the rest of the day was pretty quiet.
That is until I decided that 1 room remodel during Spring Break just wasn't enough. So why not make it 2 or 3? Yep, took on another room which included, paint, paint and more paint, switch of bedding, accessories and flip-flopping 2 rooms. Ruby's room is now the toy room and the toy room is Ruby's room! Here's a peek at Ruby's new big girl room. It's a work in progress but I've got plenty of time to work on that later.

Night #1 was a little hairy in terms of wanting to fall asleep in the new room, but night #2 turned out beautifully. The toy room on the other hand, needs some de-cluttering and Ruby has already made a dent in the once clean room. Happy playing!
Friday-Flip flop day of the rooms you saw above. Slow and steady wins the race with a few breaks for playing and eating of course.
Saturday-Ran a few errands, played, cleaned, played, made cookies to freeze, played, and ended with a bang...taxes! A great pick me up to any week (at least when you aren't paying in, which we aren't) and now watching the snow fall while Mike catches as many March Madness b-ball games as possible. Great Spring Break and sad to see it end.
Ruby even mentioned today that she wants a "hot". Why a "hot" I asked her and she simply said, "then you bow up my poo and we pay in my park". Love that girl! A pool and a park to make her day. As simple as that.

Spring Break Part I
What have we been up to now that Spring Break is officially here? LOTS! Our house and schedules have been buzzing. Here's the low down with a few pics for good standing.
Thursday-Pre-Spring Break kicked off with a bachelorette party for Missy, Mike's sister. This was also the start to the wedding weekend for her and everyone else involved, which included Ruby as the flower girl and Mike as an usher.
Friday-Full day in at school and tore out of there a.s.a.p.! Us teachers are just as bad as the kids some days I'm afraid. Then it was off to the rehearsal for Ian and Missy's wedding followed by a great meal at Smoky D's for the rehearsal supper. Noticing the theme of no pics yet? Yes, my head was swimming with too many things and the camera sadly, wasn't one of them
Saturday-Thanks to the wedding being right here in Des Moines, the three of us laid low on Saturday morning. Ruby and I ran a few errands, and then hit up Fantastic Sam's to get her hair done at 10 a.m. I wasn't sure what to expect since you never know who your hair stylist is going to be and they are kinda like a fast food joint for hair, but I can honestly say that my expectations were blown away. Here's the proof, and yes that is all Ruby's hair...no hair pieces :)

Then it was back home for a quick lunch, getting everyone dressed, final primps and touch ups and then off to the church for pictures. We got to catch up with all of the Poll family and enjoy an afternoon of pictures, hanging out and gearing up for the ceremony.
The ceremony itself was beautiful and the pastor did an AMAZING job telling the love story between Ian and Missy. I don't think there were many dry eyes in the crowd and it simply pulled at our heart strings to see them join together in marriage. What an honor to have been there for it!
The reception was soon to follow for an evening packed with food, laughter, family, friends, and dancing! I think the pics sum it up well...

Sunday-We all slept in after a long day celebrating with Ian and Missy. By late afternoon we did venture out to the hotel to catch some pool time with Grandpa and Grandma Poll, followed by supper at Apple Bees. It was a relaxing end to a busy yet joyous weekend!
Monday-Spring Break.....I decided that I would take 2 days to myself and try and not feel guilty about this one as a mom and wife. But as Mon and Tues passed by, it was well worth it. Monday I kicked into high gear and started up on a project that I was going to tackle this summer, but you've got to embrace the moment right? So that I did! Monday was busy with the start of the toy room remodel, running numerous errands, cleaning the house from top to bottom and following it all up with a girls night up. Pedicures and Orange Leaf will satisfy any girl I'm positive. Look at those happy toes! Okay...don't look too close...there's probably toe fuzz from running around in my slippers, but it's Spring Break...why not slippers :)

Tuesday-Mommy's day off again so it included putting the final touches on the "new" guest room which of course led to me running around town to find some accessories. The hard part to this all, it's a Michigan Wolverines inspired room, Go Blue! I've opted to go vintage MI and opt for some charm verse a man theme. It's nearing completion, but still waiting on an antiqued Michigan wood sign and 8 ft. barn board to serve as a shelf. So yes, it will have charm if you come to visit and no, you will not have to stay in a man's dream come true for a room. Here's a sneak peek...
In addition to the room remodel I took on the basement. A bug grave more like it. Having an unfinished basement is one thing, but why every boxelder bug finds it necessary to make their way to my basement and keel over is beyond me. So I sucked them all up via the vacuum because you are nuts to think that I might sweep them up and find some creeping around yet. Tackled a long overdue, unorganized storage cabinet and put away more of Ruby's things she's outgrown. Before I knew it, it was time to go get Ruby from daycare and run through the car wash. A favorite past time of Ruby's.
Tomorrow is a new day and it's family days from here on out. Spring Break Part II will be here before you know it! Thanks for stopping by.

Up, Up and Away
So things got much better at the Poll's this weekend. In a matter of 24 hours I saw great improvoments and give credit to our prayer warriors out there! Mike slept better, "ate" some food today through his peg tube, didn't feel nearly as sick to his stomach, and only a low grade fever. Still on the up with more to go, but it's a start. Now Mike needs to get rid of his sore/raw throat from coughing, low-grade fever, soreness, weakness, and fatigue.
Ruby and I also got a chance to catch up on a large amount of things. Laundry, bedding, dusting, vacuuming, baking, haircuts and running a few errands made up for a fulfilling day while keeping an eye out for Mike. We both sqeaked out a great nap to top of the day with Dad. I may have slept even longer than Ruby! She waltzed into my bedroom and woke me up. That may be a first :)
A few pics as well just for kicks and giggles and to lighten the mood after Thursday's post. Are they recent? No, but they still make us smile and that's what counts.

Through Sickness and Health
Some days it's hard to dig down and find the joy in our day. This week has been one of those weeks for Mike. Poor guy has been battling a cold and unfortunately it's winning and making life rough for him. We have had many sleepless nights at the Poll household and thankfully, Ruby sleeps like a rock through it all :)
Despite this cold we have been blessed by our amazing health aids and nurse and that's when I need to remind myself that I can have joy in my heart knowing that Mike is being watched over while I am at work. They have tried their best to stay on top of things with Mike before it gets worse and have been daily checking in to deal with concerns. He's had x-rays taken to clear out pneumonia, been given plenty of antibiotics to prevent pneumonia, additional meds to alter other side affects and all so far with very little relief. We are hoping and praying that in the next couple days, some comfort and relaxation will be showered on Mike.
So if you find yourself with some spare time, perhaps send a prayer Mike's way....he'd appreciate it :)

Surprise!
Ruby and I made a trek up to NW Iowa on Friday bright and early. I had the day off thanks to conferences and no one knew that we were coming except for my dad (a.k.a. Papa) Ruby and I rode through 4 hours of snow, arrived at my parents house to pick up my dad and continued into town to surprise my mom at work. My mom works at the school as a cook so we had to hustle and get there before she started serving lunch Ruby and I waltzed down the stairs to find my mom eating lunch before students arrived and boy was she surprised! Hugs were passed around and we got to sit down for a little while and chit chat. I think that we made my moms Friday just a tad brighter.
After the shock wore off we headed back out so the kiddos could get served lunch and I had a few missions of my own while back home. One of them being ALMOND PATTIES! These things are amazing if you have never had one before. Think a Dutch letter, only a solid square of rich, flaky pastry holding in thick, gooey almond paste. I made sure to stock up so my freezer here in Des Moines could hold the key to this Dutch girls heart.

After my Dutch loot was safe and sound it was just a matter of waiting for my mom to get off work so we could b-bop around Orange City and catch a few sights and friends, including my sister, Gina. Once we got back home it was plenty of play time for Rubz and even a shot at some hands with some of Papa's farm animals. I really thought that the bunny and Ruby would be best of friends, but she shyed away instead. So instead I got to hold the little guy :)
For supper, Ruby and I got to catch up with my other sister, Amy, and her husband and 3 kiddos. We met up at one of the greatest eating establishments invented and ate our way through the Pizza Ranch buffet. I can never get enough of their cactus bread (dessert pizza). Afraid all my indulgences on our surprise trip prove where Ruby gets her sweet tooth from.
After supper it was back to Papa and Mama's house for a slumber party in front of the fire place. Talk about a full heart by this time of the night. A day spent with my family, good food and conversations, and now watching our peanut nestled on top of her Hello Kitty sleeping bag sawing logs. A great day indeed!
Sounds like the weekend should come to a halt, but then Saturday came. Ruby and I hopped in the car again and made our way back to Des Moines because we also had house guests who had been hanging out with Mike while we were gone. Papa and Mama Poll were there. So upon our arrival Ruby and I were met by Papa Poll which brought more excitement for Ruby and yet another eventful day to fill the heart. While Mama Poll and Aunt Missy wrapped up some wedding details (wedding approaching in 13 days I beleive :) Ruby and I got groceries to fill our nearly empty fridge. A scary sight quite frankly. Then it was off to the hotel for some swimming and supper with the family. Ruby loves her water and at any moment she will be more than willing to let you know that when it gets hot she is going to get her poo (pool) out. Thankfully Papa and Mama were better sports than mom and swam with Ruby. I don't think that they minded too much though :)

Once officially pruny, everyone hopped out of the pool and made themselves ready for supper. Being that our hotel was right next to the Iowa Machine Shed it only seemed right to eat there as well. We made our way on over and met up with the almost newlyweds, Ian and Missy. We all hunkered down for some family style favorites and enjoyed a hearty meal together.
By the time supper was over it was time for everyone to head their own directions and catch some much needed zzz's after a busy couple days. I know that Ruby, Mike and I all had some great family time which made for a great weekend. May your weekend have been just as blessed!

I'm A Big Girl Now!
Ruby that is. She had her 3 year check up today and it went great! Ruby was seriously the perfect patient. She sat perfectly still for all the poking and prodding, opened her mouth on command and even let the doctor check out her "belly button" before bursting into giggles while Doc checked her tummy. She is such a good sport! I made sure this time to get her stats because I am well known for getting home and realizing that I already forgot them even though I swore I'd remember them all :) So for the record here they are,
Weight: 30 lbs. 6 oz., 45th percentile
Height: 40 1/2 inches (3 ft. 4.5 inches), 99th percentile
Head Circumference: 20 inches (??? No idea if that is big, small or in between :)
Long and lean I'd say! I'm sure Daddy is thinking basketball player for sure, but then again, I think she's make an adorable little cheerleader.

Mow or Scoop Snow?
Looks like someone missed the memo. It is snowing and the sunshine and sandbox are no where to be found. I wish I was mowing the lawn though!
Today's weather brought an early out for school and plenty of time outside! Cold and windy but well worth it. A great arm and leg workout for myself and one little girl tuckered out by 7 p.m. It was no question why Ruby was so tuckered out. She kept climbing every "mountain" of snow I piled up and then smooshing the dickens out of it before demolishing the next one.

Easy Does It Saturday
Talk about an easy going Saturday. The only thing on our agenda was a tax appointment and that, fingers crossed, means good things in the long run. Ruby hit up that appointment with me and then her and I be-bopped around Target to waste some time and of course, check out the toy aisle! Once we got home, Ruby dug into her toys and I dug into a sink of hot soapy water and scrubbed at our floors a bit before putting lunch together. I also realized we haven't updated anyone on Ruby's 3 year stats. She has a doctors appointment this coming week, but we did measure her on our nifty giant ruler (Thank you Uncle Mitch and Aunt Kristin!). Ruby measured in at a whopping 3 ft. 3 inches. I believe there is some good, strong Dutch blood happening there.
While eating lunch, Mike asked Ruby where her sled was. Once the word sled was said everything else was quicky forgotten...including lunch :) So we bundles ourselves up and made our way to a nearby school with some great sledding hills. Mike kept a close eye on us while Ruby and I took her first stab at sledding!

And how did we wrap our a lazy Saturday? With bath paints! I have to give a shout to an amazing woman and mommy from Mommy's Me Time, Amber. She introduced me to bath paints. She shared this neat idea on her blog and I instantly knew that it would be right up Ruby's alley. While Ruby enjoyed a nap after sledding I went to work creating some easy, peasy bath paints for her to wrap up a great day.
Ruby loved these things! I had to pry her out of the shower and convince her that she could paint again as a special treat sometime. She was so worried I may not have enough pink and blue next time. The simplicity of a child The best part? My bathroom smelled like baby all over again from the baby soap I used. Love that smell! Seriously consider doing this with any child. Especially for an enjoyable bath time that you might just have to force them to get out :)

Princess for a Day
Not only did Ruby have a fabulous birthday, Hello Kitty style, she also got an even bigger surprise Sunday from an unexpected guest. At least to her. To make a long story short, Mike's current health care agency caught wind of Ruby's birthday, thanks in part to Mike telling quite a few of them about her party, and they wanted to do something special as well. You see, their philosphy is that they take care of the whole family, not just the patient.
With that in mind, they asked if they could send a special guest to our house in addition to balloons, another cake, someone to photograph and special gifts from the guest herself. So Sunday morning Ruby got the mail. (Thank goodness she doesn't realize Sunday mail doesn't happen yet.) And in the mailbox was a letter from Cinderella herself asking if she could visit Ruby to help celebrate her 3rd birthday. Ruby was so excited she ran to her toy room and came flying out with her Cinderella dress as well to wear for the morning. As the day rolled on we heard, "Is Bella here yet" far too many times and even from her bed as Ruby attempted to take a nap despite her excitement.
Finally the hour arrived and Cinderella came knocking on our door looking for the birthday girl. How did Ruby react? Complete silence and as shy as could be! Thank goodness us adults were willing to talk with Cinderella while Ruby warmed up to her. As the minutes passed, Ruby dared enough to open some more birthday presents next to Cinderella and even let us take a picture of the two of them together.

As the time passed on we all got to take in the magic of Cinderella and live life through the eyes of a child once more. Ruby's 3rd birthday won't quickly be forgotten and it will be hard to live up to as well :) Ruby still talks about Cinderella to those who ask about her birthday. Funny how she wouldn't say a word while she was there, but it obviously left an impression on her. It never would have came together without the efforts of Mike's health care agency and we can't thank them enough for putting together such a great surprise for Ruby as well as great afternoon for us.
Happy 3rd Birthday Ruby Grace
Ruby Grace has made her debut for a whopping 3 years already! Sunday, Feb. 17, Ruby went from 2 to 3 without looking back. We partied all weekend with family and friends on Saturday evening and a surprise visit from Cinderella on Sunday for yet another party.
We love our little princess more than words can explain and look forward to what 3 has to offer. May it be filled with laughter, cuddles and far less temper tantrums than we were becoming used to late in the 2's.
